January 18, 2010 I learned that I had endometriosis after a series of clues were pieced together during my quest to become pregnant. The diagnosis was initially made by my reproductive endocrinologist via laparoscopy. It was suspected that I might have endometriosis from the history of severe menstrual cramps I had endured beginning as a teen, which were conveniently masked all the years I was on birth control to “fix” my periods. Things became more suspicious when I had an IUI cycle stopped because of polyps in the uterus and even more suspicious the next month when what looked to be a cyst was visible via ultrasound on one of my ovaries. After deciding to move forward with what my doctor and I thought would be exploratory surgery to rule out endo, it was found that I in fact had stage four endo. It was everywhere. I immediately started researching and went to see Dr. Kanayama. Dr. Kanayama recommended advanced laparoscopy, excising the endo. I decided to move forward with the surgery. The surgery went very well – as estimated it took about four hours and I have been pleased with the results. I was sore and moving slowly for a few days, but far less so than with my first laparoscopy. I was easily able to fly home a few days later. My follow up appointment a month later went well and everything was healing nicely. My periods have since been much better – much more normal and we are currently in process for IVF. Dr. Kanayama is an expert in his field and is also a compassionate doctor that takes time to thoroughly explain and discuss issues with his patients. His staff is also very professional - Sabrina is extremely helpful, diligent and kind in setting everything up, answering endless questions and working with insurance. Greenwich Hospital is also a top notch facility and I felt I received expert care there. I had a great experience with Dr. Kanayama and highly recommend him as well as this type of surgery if you are suffering from endo, as I believe it is the only real solution. Sally |
