My name is Fran Vandewater and the following commentary is based on my personal experience:

I am currently 44 years of age and have been suffering from endometriosis since I was 17. Over time I have endured numerous surgeries for ovarian cysts, a C-section, tubal ligation, etc. Each time I underwent surgery it would exacerbate the scar tissue and the endometriosis.

I consulted with several gynecologists and surgeons during my 27 years of suffering with each one suggesting I take birth control, Lupron injections, hormone supplements, etc. The endometriosis had gotten so bad that it actually traveled through the lining of the stomach wall. Two surgeons concurred that it was in my best interest to take Lupron injections rather than have surgery. I was told that my stomach would be disfigured and you would see the disfigurement thru my clothing. Needless to say, this frightened me. I thought to myself, “What alternative do I have?”

That being said, I went back to my ob/gyn and began receiving monthly injections of Lupron. Ladies, I urge you to think very carefully before taking Lupron injections as a course of treatment for endometriosis. It is a wicked drug with a magnitude of severe and debilitating side effects with little to no positive health benefits. Simply put, I feel that Lupron is a form of torture. I urge you to consult with other women who have taken such injections, as well as researching the drug and its side effects!

In September of 2009, I decided that I had suffered long enough. I was fed up with severely painful menses, bleeding through my clothing, migraines, back aches, etc. The endometriosis had interfered with my quality of life for far too long. The time had come for me to do something about my medical condition. I concluded that I was not going to allow this disease to control me or my lifestyle any longer. I had to take control of my health so that I could enjoy quality of life.

Just like many of you, I “Googled” endometriosis. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a specialist who was potentially capable of restoring my health. I reviewed the benefits of the surgical procedure and the credentials of Dr. Kanayama. I was most impressed with his educational background and residency training at Mayo Clinic. Could Dr. Kanayama really help? It was time for me to schedule a consultation to meet with Dr. Kanayama.

The moment my husband and I entered Dr. Kanayama’s office we had a positive feeling. We were impressed with his staff and office procedures. It was clear that the office was well managed and that all patients were of the utmost importance.

Dr. Kanayama did not rush through my consultation. Together, the three of us reviewed my past medical records. Dr. Kanayama asked various questions regarding my past history and present symptoms. He also performed an internal examination at which point he confirmed that I did, in fact, have Stage 3 endometriosis. My husband and I were very impressed by the time, care and concern that was extended to me. I was finally able to receive sound medical responses to the many questions I had. Not only did all of the answers make sense, but they all added up. Finally, I had a complete understanding of what I had, why I had it and what could be done to remedy it. Speaking with Dr. Kanayama gave me a strong sense of knowledge and understanding of my own body. He understood what I was saying and how I felt. It was at that moment that I knew I had to go forward ... I had to have Dr. Kanayama perform laparoscopic surgery on me. Not only did I want it done but I wanted it performed as soon as possible. My husband and I were informed that the procedure would be performed at Greenwich Hospital, Yale New Haven Health. Dr. Kanayama said that Greenwich Hospital was where he performed these surgeries and that this is where his team was. Dr. Kanayama trained his team utilizing the Mayo Clinic theories. Every patient is special and their care is of the utmost importance.

While speaking with Dr. Kanayama at my first post-operative appointment, I told him that I now refer to him as “Dr. God.” He graciously smiled and said, “I am not God, I am one of God’s instruments.” Dr. Kanayama had warned me that I may have some pain and discomfort but that he would provide me with pain medicine. I am happy to report that I really did not suffer from pain. I did, however, have some discomfort but nothing that even required me taking two Tylenol.

Earlier I inquired as to whether or not Dr. Kanayama could really help. Well, now I know for certain . . . Dr. Kanayama has cured my Stage 3 of 4 endometriosis. There is no need to suffer any longer ladies. Dr. Kanayama can give you high-quality care that you so deserve. Dr. Kanayama’s expertise in laparoscopic endometrial surgery has contributed immeasurably to the wellness of my health today. Schedule a consultation for yourself ... you’ll be extremely grateful that you did.
